McLean Select Basketball

Brian McNicoll
Coach, Grade 7 Girls, Division 2

Brian McNicoll is the one of the most experienced coaches in Northern Virginia. He has coached for more than 30 years, beginning in Louisiana and continuing here.

This will be his 10th year coaching in the McLean Select Basketball program and his 14th year overall coaching in McLean. His select teams have reached the finals in five times in the 10 years he has coached McLean Select and have been in at least the semifinals eight times.

He routinely coaches two teams in both the county leagues and in the spring/summer Matrix AAU program, which means, combining fall, winter and summer leagues, he coaches more than 120 games per year.

McNicoll, who has coached at least three players who went on to Division I basketball, employs a high-pressure, high-octane style which keeps all the players involved and relies on them for on-floor decision making.

Lisa D'Ambrosio-Irons
Assistant Coach

Background: Lisa is a Northern Virginia native having grown up in Arlington where she played Tennis, Soccer and Basketball.  Clubs sports she participated in included Arlington Travel League and AAU Basketball under Bill Finney, the long- time coach at Marymount University. Lisa attended Washington-Lee High School where she lettered 12 times, 4 each in Tennis, Soccer, and Basketball.  She then attended George Mason University, graduating with a BS degree in Psychology.  Lisa has a long career in banking and now works for Access National Bank as a Vice President, Business Relationship Manager.  Lisa and her husband Richard have 3 girls, all of whom play basketball and soccer for Mclean Youth Programs.

Experience:  Lisa has been coaching for Mclean youth sports for over 8 years.  She started coaching house league soccer in 2008 and continued until her middle daughter moved on to the MYS travel program in 2013.  Her coaching career for basketball started in 2011 when her oldest was in the 5th grade and started playing in the house league.  As she progressed and moved on to the MYB Select program,  Lisa then picked up coaching in her middle daughter’s age group in the 4th grade.  Last season she then transitioned with her daughter to the Select program, coaching the 8th Girls Division 2 team.  Lisa has experienced great success in her role as coach:

·         That 4th grade team placed 2nd for the season, 1st in the tournament.

·         The 5th grade team placed 1st in the season, 3rd in the tournament.

·         7th /8th grade team last season placed 1st in the season, undefeated, and 3rd in the tournament.

·         Lisa was named Coach of the year for the Division 1 middle school girls (2016).

·         4th place finish for Division 2 Girls 8th grade

Philosophy:  Coach Irons believes that basketball and really all sports should be fun, imparting life lessons along the way.  Kids should enjoy coming to practice, playing in games, and watching their skills continue to improve.  Practices will be structured with drills to continue building on the fundamentals of basketball as well as more detailed plays and concepts to prepare the girls for high school play.
