McLean Select Basketball
Coach, Boys' 8th Grade, Division 1
Coach Goettman and Coach Edwards are entering their 5th year of coaching together.
Coach Goettman has coached for McLean Select Basketball for 11 years. During that time, Coach Goettman has coached a total of 14 teams comprising every grade level of boys and girls in the FCYBL. Coach Goettman was awarded Coach of the Year twice by his fellow coaches, and his teams have done consistently well in league play – including several regular season championships and runner-ups and multiple tournament finals (but only one championship).
Coach Goettman has also led the McLean Select Basketball program as it Commissioner for the last eight years.
Coach Goettman enjoys a very up tempo approach to basketball which he terms “structured chaos.” Coach Goettman builds skill fundamentals with the greatest emphasis on creating overall court awareness and instinctual play within a structured spacing framework. His team almost always press; they emphasize transition basketball; and players have opportunities to learn the game from all positions on the court. The method behind this madness is more possessions per game which enables more touches and different opportunities for his players to create and score. His teams generally lead the age group in scoring.
Coach Goettman also believes that this style of play is fantastic cross training for other fast moving sports such as soccer and lacrosse. He is very happy that over 10 of his former players have played sports at the collegiate level (many in D1) in a variety of sports.
Coach Goettman is very loyal Duke Blue Devil and encourages all of his players to wear (Duke) blue whenever possible. He also went to the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
